Ingredients

For the brownies:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 8 oz (225g) semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For the topping:

  • 1 cup M&M's (plain or peanut)

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides to lift the brownies out easily.

2. Melt the butter and chocolate

In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and chopped semi-sweet chocolate together, stirring frequently until smooth. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

3. Mix the sugars and eggs

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and brown sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

4. Combine the mixtures

Slowly pour the melted chocolate mixture into the sugar-egg mixture, stirring constantly until well combined.

5. Sift the dry ingredients

In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, folding gently until just combined. Do not overmix.

6. Pour and add M&M's

Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Sprinkle the M&M's over the top, pressing them slightly into the batter.

7. Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Be careful not to overbake, as you want the brownies to remain fudgy.

8. Cool and serve

Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cooled, use the parchment paper overhang to lift the brownies out of the pan. Cut into squares and serve.

Store any leftover brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
